Your feedback on our classes

"The lesson was great. Emily really changed the way I look at composition and photography in general. She answered all my questions and was very patient. She was genuinely interested in helping me improve my photography. I would highly recommend the workshop."
Eric R.
"I enjoyed the course very much and I learned much more than what I had expected for such a short course. Warm regards and good luck with this project"

"Really good class (mon 16th in paris, with Rachael Woodson) that gave a good introduction to a lot of basic fundamentals in photography, excactly what I needed. The teacher was very educational and explained in a good way that made it easy to understand. It would have been good with an extra hour though, because the time went by so fast. And a bit slower walking/moving,...

"It was more than just a classic workshop - Frédéric shared his passion for photography with me. I made significantly more progress throughout that day than in hours spent photographing by myself, because Frédéric knew how to teach me the little things, tips, or techniques that make the difference. We did many practical exercises in different lighting conditions and...

"I would like to thank you for a very enjoyable Workshop on Composition in Brussels with Emily Smith. Emily's methodology was spot on. She struck the right balance between theory, practical advice and tips and getting out there and having a go – all offered under a relaxed and encouraging atmosphere. It was great to acquire so much knowledge in such a short time and...

"I had the chance to follow a composition workshop with Emily Smith on December 15 2012 and it was really impressing. It is so amazing to get information from a professional photographer with so much knowledge about composition and coulour combination. Ms. Smith had an answer to all the questions and the communication flow is absolutely great. I'd really recommend...

"I would like to mention that I enjoyed the step-by-step introduction to the different portrait styles and the following hands-on practice with the tutor. Her great expertise in the field, her enthusiasm as well as her and the model's patience; the information and advice given on different techniques and the immediate feed-back provided were extremely valuable. In...

“ I took the beginners course of four x 3hr lessons in a group of four students with Emily. The set-up was great – a small group (four students), meeting in the relaxed informal setting of a café for theory and questions, then going out to have adventures with our cameras, finally meeting at the end of each session to review each other’s pictures and get teacher feedback. The...

"I learnt to do things I wouldn't have thought possible with my camera. Thanks a lot to Maxime on our behalf, it was a much appreciated gift."

"Erwan B : the workshop, Photographically exploring the City of Light, has fully fulfilled my expectations.I am a beginner as I have always utilized compact cameras in automatic mode and the phographer has shown me the main principles of the other modes during the 2 hours workshop. The photographer was patient, flexible in term of scope, interresting in term of experience...

"I have participated recently in four worskshops for beginners with Emily. The course took place in Brussels. It has met all my expectations. It combined a part on theory with photo shooting. Emily is not only an experienced and enthusiastic photographer, but she also enjoys teaching photography. She had a personalised approach to students and took her time to explained...

This photographic tour along the southern coast of Iceland will introduce you to some of the island’s best features: waterfalls, lava fields, glaciers and fjords.
Iceland is the perfect terrain for this landscape based photo workshop - it is, afterall, indredibly photogenic. No previous experience in landscape photography is necessary. On the sixth day, you can take advantage of the pleasant city of Reykjavik before taking a flight home. If you would like to extend your visit in Iceland, our team is happy to help with any advice on touristic and logistic matters.

Participants are expected to know the basics of photography, but elements such as composition, aperture, lighting will be taught on a need-to-know basis. We offer 50% off on introductory photography classes for those in need, as a preparation for the trip. Participants are strongly encouraged to bring their own laptops, when possible, to facilitate the processing of their own images. A large memory-card is also strongly encouraged, as they allow more freedom while on the trip. (minimum two cards of 8Go)

Gudmundur Ingolfsson, your guide, is a native Icelander and well-known photographer - he’ll be your photography instructor as well as your chauffeur. Professionally, he has extensively photographed theater arts, architecture, and culinary creations. His personal work deals more with Icelandic landscapes, both urban and rural. For more information about his photographic background, consult his photographer's page.

Please note that the group is limited to 5 participants, since we believe smaller groups create better, one-on-one learning environments. The primary language spoken during the workshop will be English (since most Icelanders speak English fluently). Gudmundur also speaks German, Danish, and a little French.
Below is a day-by-day itinerary. We are always thinking about weather and we will adapt the program to fit the weather if need be.

The trip can be paid in phases of several french checks, with a down payment of 75% of the total cost before the beginning of the trip.

Technical aspects:

Lesphotographes.org is not a travel agency. You must consider this as a personnal trip with a guide. **Mandatory**: You must take care of your own insurance: purchase cancellation insurance and repatriation assistance with your insurance company. We refuse any responsability in case of accidents or cancellations.

Each of the four nights, you will stay in a comfortable double bedroom in a hotel, breakfast included. (Fosshotel Mosfell, Fosshotel Vatnajökull, and Fosshotel Skaftafell). Lunch will come in the form of a hearty picnic, to be eaten on location. You are free, however, to make your own plans for dinner.

The group will be driven to the various destinations in a large van. Please try to limit your packing to one suitcase per person plus your photo equipment. Those wishing to work with a large format camera are asked to contact us in advance. Please be prepared for any kind of weather (i.e warm clothes, caps, and mittens or gloves).

We suggest you arrive in Iceland on the early morning flight on August 26th. You will be picked up at the airport and will dive right in to the Icelandic landscape. At the end of your trip, you will stay one night in Reykjavik (the night of August 30th). The workshop officially ends the morning of the 31th. Reykjavik is a charming city so feel free to extend your trip beyond the dates of the photo workshop.

Day-by-day itinerary (please find map below):

- Day 1:  From Reykjavík to Reykjanes, the peninsula south of Keflavík airport. We will pass hot springs and beautiful shorelines as we drive southeast along the coast towards the town of Hella.
- Day 2: From Hella, we’ll pass two waterfalls (Seljalandsfoss and Skógarfoss) while heading to the coast at Vik. Highlights include fantastic lava fields at Kirkjubæjarklaustur, plus another waterfall (Foss á Síðu). It will be a long day, pausing at Jökulsárlón (the famous bay where the glacier Vatnajökull melts into the ocean) and finishing in the town of Hornafjördur.
- Day 3: From Hornafjördur, we’ll visit the fjord to the East, but the majority of the day will be spent at Jökulsárlón and on the shore.
- Day 4: For the early risers, we could make an early morning visit to Jökulsárlón. Then we’ll drive back west, visiting Gullfoss (waterfall) and Geysir (a spouting hot spring) en route to Reykjavík, where you will spend the last night.
- Day 5: In the morning, you are free to explore the capital on your own. In the afternoon, you’ll meet with the group one last time at Gudmundur’s photography studio for lunch and to discuss the editing of your photos.

"First, I want to thank you for your availability and kindness throughout the preparation (psychological and technical!) of this magnificent trip. For the rest, EVERYTHING was great: 1) The guide and photographer GUMI (his name is too long and complicated to pronounce it as it's written) was really fabulous. Of course he gave poignant photographic advice, but he also was a real road companion - happy, cheerful, and was dedicated to helping us discover Iceland "for real!" He has real cooking skills (ask for his mustard-herring recipe...a culinary delicacy!) and was very kind and patient throughout it all. He was also funny and knew how to laugh with us, and the pleasure he took in showing us his country was immediately contagious! Where I'm concerned, being the only person that left Monday, Gumi came to my hotel to pick me up at 5am and bring me to the bus, which then took me to the airport - I very much appreciated this gesture. Finally, he sent us a few photos right away that he had taken, and once again, this was a real treat for me - obviously, I'm never in my own photos!!! 2) The hotels: a good quality, enjoyable, with nice staff that always make the necessary effort to be understood and to satisfy the client. 3) Transport by 4x4 was very comfortable, and included shuttling the luggage from the beginning to the end of the trip. 4) I recommend the airline ICELANDAIR - the flights were on time, and enjoyable, with complimentary drinks for example, which is not the case is all airlines!!! One small regret: we would have like to keep our wonderful guide with us for the last night, so as to offer him a drink "amongst friends" and thank him. But we understood perfectly his desire to return home and relax, because the trip was nonetheless intense and without a doubt tiring since he drove so much."

"I had a marvelous visit with a guide that was funny, courteous, and very skilled. These four days were intense and the landscapes stunning. I hope to do another similar trip!"

"The photo trip in Iceland was a voyage in another world. Everything was perfect: the weather, the chosen locations, the organization. Our photographer was very attentive to our well-being. He showed us photogenic places and guided us in photo technique. One little regret: I would have liked more time dedicated to photo theory (composition, etc.) by critiquing the photos already made."
